difference is happy: Excerpt from "A Eulogy to #Occupy" by Quinn Norton -

difference-is-happy:

“From the beginning there were two main parts to Occupy. There was the cause of economic justice — the idea that resources shouldn’t be distributed so unevenly. This idea, in its myriad forms, drove marches and injected the rhetoric of the “99 percent” into the political dialogue. This was what…

Can you say Fiscal Cliff?
We called for cuts to the military budget, NOT to Social Security and other benefits at a rally today in downtown Palo Alto. We joined THE ACTION to express our disenchantment with the system that brought about this mess.
Spanish language media from Channel 14 Univision showed a bit of our rally on their 6pm news and El Mensajero News described it in detail.  Also on hand as well was our friendly photographer Kristina from the Palo Alto Daily News.

“We had a productive meeting at the White House, and I am hopeful that we will be able to avoid the fiscal cliff. At President Obama’s request, I am readying a bill for a vote by Monday that will prevent a tax hike on middle-class families making up to $250,000, and that will include the additional, critical provisions outlined by President Obama. In the next twenty-four hours, I look forward to hearing any good-faith proposals Senator McConnell has for altering this bill.” — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid detailing this weekend’s Fiscal Cliff festivities.  (via volumenometry)

 66 HOURS LEFT
I’m Kathleen Rector, and I live in Centennial, CO.  I’m a 65-year-old unemployed systems and software engineer, having been laid-off by Lockheed-Martin in 2009.  I keep hearing about how the most wealthy 2% create jobs when their taxes are low, but you sure couldn’t prove that by my situation.  I’ve given up looking for employment and am now working on building my own business in Web design and development.  In the past 3 years I’ve spent over half of my IRA to pay bills.
I’ll eligible for full Social Security in 2013 an had been hoping that with those benefits,  a very small pension, and income from my business I would finally be able to meet my expenses.  I really want to stay in my home, but unless I can re-finance that’s not going to happen and If my taxes go up that will about finish me financially.  Please don’t hold my financial security hostage to tax cuts for millionaires.
